My son is 6 yrs old (10-01-04). He just finished Kindergarten and the teacher would like him to repeat. He would be a 19 y/o senior in High School if I did. He is extremely shy with adults–he plays well with children. The teacher says he doesn’t know his beginning-middle-ending sounds, and he needs to be a level 3 reader before 1st grade. I believe he knows them but doesn’t want to share his answers. We live in Oregon, the birthday cut off for school is Sept. 1st. My son is one of the oldest in his class, but he is smaller then average in size. I have enrolled him in a 4 week reading class starting in August, and have my neighbor (a High school science teacher with 5 children of her own) willing to tutor him daily for 20 mins. during the summer. What else can I do to prepare him for 1st. grade?
Thank you,
Aubyn Reyes
My daughter is five years old. (o1-27-o6) She just finished Pre-school and she can’t read. Her teacher says she is really smart just need to work on reading for the whole summer. She can read some stuff but really really need help. I’m going to start taking her to the library for sit in reading. We bought her all kinds of books and My child can read books. What else can i do? Thank You Arica Freeman
Hi, Aubyn,
I’ll help you come up with some materials for him to work with.
Don’t give up! We’ll talk together and work out something. I can see that it would be very hard on you both for him to be held back.
Do you read to him each day, and does he enjoy listening? That’s where we’ll start. Fill me in on that, and we’ll go from there.
Paula
P.S. It is completely normal for a child his age to not know those sounds. These are things that are supposed to happen relatively naturally, at different times for different children, and years ago, it wouldn’t have been a problem at all.
Now the schools push, push, push, and NOT all children are ready. It infuriates me! Uh oh, I better not get started!
At any rate, we’ll talk some more about him and find some answers. I’ve emailed you.
Hi, Arica,
It sounds like she’s doing very well. I’ve entered you in the drawing.
Read to her each day, and talk about the stories. It may be that they have you worrying a bit too much. If she hasn’t entered kindergarten yet, she has plenty of time.
I’ve emailed you, so we’ll keep in touch.

my daughter is 10 years old. She has always had trouble with reading phonics, reading aloud, reading too slow for schools. Any how she has always been in “reading groups” which weren’t great help plus instead of her working on reading with her reading group during literature time they take her out during science or social studies. Now she is falling behind in those subjects.
thank you,
sherry martin
Sherry, that happens so often with readers who need help! It doesn’t seem to make common sense, does it? Good luck!
Hi,
my daughter is 8 and finishing 2nd grade. She has 20 weeks of eye therapy because she complained of blurry vision and was not able to read in 1st grade. She was falling behind and would get discouraged when reading. Now that she’s had eye therapy things are a little better but she is still not eager to read. She starts but gets discouraged when she needs help with a lot of words (i would be too). Maybe a reading tutor during the summer would be helpful to give her confidence in reading. She wants to be excited about reading but because it’s difficult it’s not fun.
She also writes phonetically instead of learning the patterns. I’m a little concerned that coming into 3rd grade she’ll have a hard time with all the reading that is required and she’ll fall behind. Any suggestions are appreciated.
Susy
It is a shame that she fell so behind. Like you, I can see why she dislikes it with all the work she has to do. Good luck!
My bother is 7 yrs old the last child of the seven of us. He is really falling behind in reading and is in danger of failling the grade. If he passes on he would still be way behind the reading level. There is no one able to study with him because we all have to work to help out. Please help me with this.
It sounds like you are a great sister. I wish you luck on the drawing!
My daughter Alana is 5 years old 2-11-06 she hasnt had the advantage of abott preschool because her birthday is either too late or too early. She will be entering Kindergarten in September and im worried she’ll be behind. She has no confidence in herself and tends to cry if I make her practice her letters because she’s afraid of getting it wrong or being percieved as stupid. I just want my daughter to excel in school, I know the first step is a love for reading.
Hi, Tanisha,
Do you read stories with her every day? Fun books, good stories, that she enjoys? The first thing we’ll want to do is make sure she really wants to read, and is anxious to try! I’ll contact you.
Hi, Paula: My 8 year old daughter would never pick-up a book unless I ask her to. I know that my daughter struggles with reading and she has a fear of books. We are searching for a solution to move past the reading problem and into a reading solution. christina
Hi Paula , I have a 9yr old name Terri,11-02-2001, that has been passed in her preschool thru 3 rd grade classes and can’t read on her level . These schools have just passed her along now that she is in 3rd grade she couldn’t get good grades because she is not on her reading Level she couldn’t pass the ISAT exam so they sent her to summer school and the teacher even gave her extra credit work she loves to read is very eager to learn and she loves to write but she doesn’t know the materials because of poor Reading , so now the school has failed her and she is very heartbroken.I need help with her so bad.I am going to ask the school to maybe test her so that she can possibly be in a program that will give her remedial help .I am unemployed at the time so I can’t afford a tutor the prices are so steep.
Sean, my step-son is trying so hard to become more responsible and less dependant on others. However i think that one of the main reasons he seems to have a hard time and struggle is because he is so far behind in reading, how does he know what to do when he is to complete work alone or read instruction? I read with him everynight and have him read everynight sometimes even in the morning. Due to his frustration he tends to get upset and want to give up trying i really would like some professional assistance so that I can make sure the right tools are being applied at home and everywhere else! I really would like to be nominated or qualify for this because honestly I cannot afford to get him professional tutoring or assistance programs mentoring none of the above. My family and I have a household of four and make less than 15,000 a year… I would like to beable to make sure my next child also is being taught and implemented reading skills young so that I can try and prevent reading and learning “disabilities” or struggles. I know that I dont reach out and find additional assistance for my step son there is a strong chance that he will be held back this year. please my child can read, help him to learn and help me to become a better teacher as well!
sincerely,
